| The costa de la luz |
Costa de la LuzThe Costa de la Luz is possibly the most unspoilt of all the southern Spanish coasts and has seen much less development and Spanish property sales to foreigners than its Costa del Sol cousin. Geographically, the coast runs from Gibraltar in the south up in a northwesterly direction to the Portuguese border. The coast faces the green blue Atlantic and has some of the most stunning white sandy beaches in the whole of Spain, at times you could be forgiven for thinking you were in the Caribbean. The climate is warm and dry although closer to Gibraltar the coast is often windy making it the one of the most popular windsurfing and kite surfing destinations in the whole of Europe. The people attracted to the Costa de la Luz tend to be different to those on the other ‘Costas’ of Spain, the attitude can be more laid back and the style, fashion and way of life more bohemian. This is especially so in the surfer hangout of Tarifa which is becoming a popular tourist destination, attracting a multitude of visitors from around the world. Jenna Bush (daughter of the president) and Gwyneth Paltrow were recently seen there enjoying the nightlife and culture. The types of properties available for sale on the Costa de la Luz are still very reasonable but have seen a huge increase in value in the last two years. This is now an exciting area for investing in Spanish property that should prove a sound return in the coming years.
The biggest city on the Costa de la Luz is Cadiz (capital of the province of Cadiz) This city has some of the oldest buildings of any city in Europe and is also famous for it’s Mardi Gras. North of Cadiz is the Doñana national park, home of some of Europe’s richest marshland. This protected area is a haven for naturalists and boasts eagles, wading birds, turtles and Lynx (Spanish big cats).

The Doñana national park and other nature reserves on the Costa del la Luz mean that there are much stricter controls on building and development. Much of the new Spanish properties for sale on this coast may be found north west of Doñana in towns such as Chiclana, Conil, Vejer de la Frontera, Zahara de los Atunes and up to Ayamonte. Those seeking a calmer pace of life and a fantastic return on investment should consider Spanish property for sale in this area.
